Why Hip Hop Artists Don’t Make Money Underground

I don’t think I know anybody who doesn’t like at least one Beach Boys song, but I like most and have liked them since I was younger. When I was about 10 I used to save my pocket money and buy LP’s and one day while I was at the market I came across Pet Sounds and bought it for 50p because I actually thought it was going to be the sounds of various animals, and thought it would be funny to own. When I got home and played it realized that it wasn’t what i thought at all, but became an instant fan. After that I saved up again and again and bought more Beach Boys albums.

Rhapsody is primarily a streaming service for their library of over 1,000,000 songs as well as pre-programmed and favorite artist-based internet radio stations. You get your own station customized to your personal music taste as you set up genres and rate songs, artists and albums. You can also download songs, but you have to purchase them ($.89) in order to burn them to a CD. The sound quality of Rhapsody is clear as a bell. They have plenty of major top-40 content. I downloaded the songs I couldn’t find on eMusic from Rhapsody. Even of relatively obscure things like Broadway cast recordings, Rhapsody had albums and artists I could not find on eMusic. I got “The Book Report” from the show “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”.

This website is pretty incredible. It’s basically known that if royalties increase on web-streaming radio stations, Pandora is going to be among the many sites that shut down. They are at the forefront of the royalty battle against the RIAA.

A good friend of mine is getting married next weekend and his bachelor party was this past Saturday. He wanted nothing too crazy, just a grillout and a nightclub afterwards. He began to ask me for suggestions. I thought in my head and something quickly came to mind, the new Boogie Nights 80’s dance club at the Hollywood Casino (Lawrenceburg, Indiana). Now you are asking me why did that come to mind? The answer is radio advertising. I am a big fan of rock music and this particular station was airing ads for this club multiple times per day during the drive home slot (3-7), which typically has the highest listenership as well. Due to this suggestion, the club made over $1000 on drinks/food from our group.

Her father, Joe, was the youth minister for their Baptist church and encouraged his daughter’s efforts. Apparent that she was very talented, Jessica’s parents took her to audition for the Disney Channel’s The New Mickey Mouse Club. She was only twelve years old at the time, competing against two other future divas, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.

If you plan it well and know what you’re aiming for, then radio can play a crucial role in getting your band/music out there. Remember to do your homework before you start and good luck.
